1. Compact Size and High Density
EVAFLEX® and MINIFLEX® are ultra-compact, high density, light weight connectors for FPC: flexible printed circuit (polyimide-based copper circuits) and FFC: flexible flat ribbon-style cables (typically PET-based). Smallest 10 pins EVALFLEX® 5-VS connector only takes up to 45 Sq. mm area on PCB and availability of multiple profile heights from 2 mm up to 6.6 mm typical provides design flexibility in high density, light weight, space constrained portable electronic systems.
The Ultra Small EVALFLEX® and MINIFLEX® connectors result in smaller, lighter and thinner electronics systems with increased signal count where routing and placement of signals is challenging. Connectors with integrated locking feature are useful in high vibration and shock environments and eliminate the need for separate external locks in design, saving additional board space and cost.

2. High Frequency and Data Rates
In the modern compact consumer electronics including smartphones, tablets, AR/VR and wearables, Flexible Printed Circuits are no longer “just interconnects”—they behave as controlled-impedance highly flexible, low loss transmission media. A high quality FPC connector is essential part of these interconnects since the impedance of connector including the parasitic capacitance and inductance coming from contact geometry, pin density and grounding all affect the data rates of complete interconnect.
I-PEX offers high-performance, high-density connectors for Flat Flexible Circuits (FFCs) and Flexible Printed Circuits (FPCs) in its EVAFLEX® series products. By integrating EMI shielding, optimizing contact pin plating, geometry, pitch and density, these connectors offer high data rates up to 20 Gbps per lane with excellent signal integrity. High Speed FFC and FPC interconnects are commonly used in Display/Camera subsystems where signals use MIPI C-PHY, MIPI D-PHY and Embedded Display Ports protocols and data rates can be up to 8 Gbps typically. 5G mmWave antenna modules can also use short FPC interconnects.

3. Auto-Lock/Mechanical Lock for High Retention?
Mechanical Locking including Autolocking in EVAFLEX® and MINIFLEX® series connectors isn’t just a convenience feature—it’s a reliability mechanism that becomes increasingly critical as pitch shrinks, data rates rise, and mechanical tolerances tighten in modern electronics.
These connectors are designed so that the FFC/FPC slides in with almost no force, and then a latch (flip-lock, slide-lock, or actuator) clamps it in place. Auto-locking variants go a step further by engaging the lock automatically (or semi-automatically) during insertion.
Key advantages of integrating mechanical locking in these connectors include consistent contact force, reduced assembly variability, improved signal integrity and lower risk of incomplete mating. Also, clicking feedback from the lock will help to prevent half-mating insertion. The auto-lock structure reliably holds the notched FFC, creating excellent retention force against pulling and vibration.

4. High Temperature Resistance?
I-PEX offers a wide range of connectors, providing a lineup of products that maintain stable electrical connection performance even in high-temperature environments. Our integrated development process combines material research, thermal analysis, and evaluation methodologies—to meet the stringent demands of high-temperature environments and provide strong support for our customers’ needs.
High performance EVAFLEX® and MINIFLEX® series FPC and FFC connectors are engineered to maintain stable electrical and mechanical performance even in applications requiring continuous operation at elevated temperatures up to 125°C, delivering high performance under harsh operating conditions such as those found in automotive and industrial equipment.
Signal Integrity performance including Insertion Loss, Return Loss and Jitter in high-speed signals, current carrying capacity and mechanical performance including contact force retention, housing and structural integrity and locking mechanism integrity are some critical functional aspects that should be considered while using these connectors in high temperature applications.

5. Signal Integrity Performance?
Signal Integrity (SI) becomes one of the dominant design constraints once FPC/FFC interconnects are used for high-speed digital interfaces with the typical data rates of >1 Gbps. and signal rise times of <500ps. Planer and/or parallel traces of FPC/FFC type interconnects result in minimal shielding, moderate impedance control, high cross talk and low EMI immunity at such data rates, thereby making signal integrity performance even more critical for connectors used in such interconnects.
EVAFLEX® series connectors can be used with both Shielded and non-shielded FPCs and FFCs and are specified to operate up to 24 +Gbps with low insertion and return loss. Tight impedance control, integrated ground contact pins, strict manufacturing tolerances and use of high-quality materials for these connectors ensures excellent time domain reflectometry performance and Open Signal Eye in high-speed signal transmission leading to minimal Bit Error Rate and high-fidelity data on receiving end.

6. Reliability by Design?
Reliability is designed into EVAFLEX® and MINIFLEX® series connectors with innovative locking designs. Hold down feature provides additional robustness and the unique contact design allows the actuator operation without FPC inserted just in case in manufacturing environment. An actuator based locking mechanism in MINIFLEX® connectors also applies a controlled, repeatable normal force between contacts and pads—critical for consistent contact resistance. Actuators in connector designs provide zero insertion force for FPCs, prevent in complete insertion, help in maintaining the connection with FPC, avoid any contact deformations and contact buckling. The actuator in an FPC/FFC connector is the mechanical element that clamps the FPC/FFC in place, ensures stable electrical contact, and protects the connection from vibration and shock.
