Compact Size and High Density

EVAFLEX® and MINIFLEX® are ultra-compact, high density, light weight connectors for FPC: flexible printed circuits (polyimide-based copper circuits) and FFC: flexible flat ribbon-style cables (typically PET-based). Smallest 10 pins EVALFLEX® 5-VS connector only takes up to 45 Sq. mm area on PCB and availability of multiple profile heights from 0.5 mm (MINIFLEX® 4-ST) up to 6.6 mm typical provides design flexibility in high density, light weight, space constrained portable electronic system.

The Ultra Small EVALFLEX® and MINIFLEX® connectors result in smaller, lighter and thinner electronics systems with increased pin count where routing and placement of signals is challenging. Connectors with integrated locking features are useful in high vibration and shock environments and eliminate the need for separate external locks in design, saving additional board space and cost.
4 pins MINIFLEX® 4-ST is the smallest FPC connector in MINIFLEX® connector series measuring only 3.5 x 3 x 0.5 mm with the pin pitch of just 0.4 mm. The connector needs total PCB area of only 5.5 sq mm. MINIFLEX® 175 series connectors are unique in the way that they offer higher density and smaller size with the staggered pin out including a locking feature. Figure 1 below shows a 7 pin MINIFLEX® 175 connector measuring only 3.14 x 3 mm with super low-profile height of 0.52 mm only.

EVAFLEX® and MINIFLEX® connectors are available in various various sizes and profile heights in both Horizontal and Vertical Mating types. The selection of different sizes, respective PCB footprints and mated heights make them suitable for use in the latest Ultra-thin, high density, portable electronics without compromising the electrical and mechanical performance.
EVAFLEX® series connectors are relatively higher speed connectors supporting up to 24 +Gbps as compared to MINIFLEX® series connectors. With the pin pitch of 0.5 mm and pin counts from 10 pins to 80 pins (EVAFLEX® 5-SE-VT), EVAFLEX® series connectors are available in profile heights of 1.9 mm to 6.6 mm.
These connectors can simplify the complex internal wiring challenges in portable electronics by combining high speed, power and control signals on FFC and FPCs in a tight space with higher overall Harness flexibility, less weight, easier routing, less failure points and faster assembly times as compared to separate harness assemblies. 
High density and small form factors of these connectors enable innovative system designs like curved display screens in Automotives, Ultra-Thin Notebook PCs etc. Table 1 shows the available line up of EVAFLEX® connectors with pin counts, pin pitch, height, width and depth for reference.

FPC/FFC connectors like EVAFLEX® and ultra-thin FPC/FFC assemblies like MINIFLEX® allow routing of signals through tight spaces or around bends – useful in wearable designs. Another key strategy is multi-functional design – combining signal and power into a single connector when possible. Fewer separate connectors mean fewer enclosure openings and a smaller footprint. 
MINIFLEX® connectors offer some of the lowest profile heights and over all FFC/FPC connector sizes options in the Industry.  
Material selection, mould design, size and shape of contacts, stamping process are some of key considerations in manufacturing of compact, high density, high quality FPC/FFC connectors. High density, compact connectors like MINIFLEX® 175-ST enable the interconnection of camera with the main boards using flexible printed circuits in small wearable electronics that need high  tight bending and flexing of FPC over and over again with reliability in hinged designs.

The table shows some unique connector options from MINIFLEX® portfolio, like smallest pin count (4 pins) to largest pin count (120 pins), Mechanical Lock Options for additional retention, High temperature option up to 125℃ and DW-5 type connectors for FPC and Discrete wires, where same receptacle can be used for FPC directly or Discrete wires with the plug. Additionally, there are connectors with Hold down feature for robust operation, Front Flip and Backflip type connectors. These connectors can be used in a variety of applications addressing some of the very challenging requirements without compromising quality and performance.
