Auto-Lock/Mechanical Lock for High Retention

Mechanical Locking including Auto-locking in EVAFLEX® and MINIFLEX® series connectors isn’t just a convenience feature—it’s a reliability mechanism that becomes increasingly critical as pitch shrinks, data rates rise, and mechanical tolerances tighten in modern electronics.
These connectors are designed so the FFC/FPC slides in with low insertion force, and then a latch (front flip lock, back-flip lock or auto-lock) clamps it in place. Auto-locking variants go a step further by engaging the lock automatically during insertion. Key advantages of integrating mechanical locking in these connectors include  reduced assembly variability, better retention force and lower risk of incomplete mating. At the same time, availability of Horizontal and Vertical Mating options in these connectors results in better design flexibility and higher reliability.

EVAFLEX® series connectors offer Auto locking feature in all available connector types including the fully shielded EVAFLEX® 5-HD types operating at data rates of 24+ Gbps. Integrated mechanical locks in connectors maintain precise alignment and compression for high-speed interfaces to maintain impedance matching and excellent signal integrity.
Consistent locking prevents disengagement of contacts which otherwise can introduce electrical discontinuities resulting in data and power loss. These connectors offer different mechanisms to release the lock including opening the top cover, pushing the side buttons and top shell as shown in Figure 2 below. Also, Auto-locking designs often provide tactile/audible feedback or self-engagement and result in single insertion operation providing ease of use in manufacturing environments.

Mechanical locks provide defined retention  force independent of friction, thereby increasing the resulting retention force. Actuator based integrated Mechanical lock is offered in variety of MINIFLEX® series connectors with different pin pitches i.e 0.175mm, 0.3mm, 0.4mm and 0.5mm.
Insertion force is lower for these MINIFLEX® connectors that make them ZIF type connectors. These connectors use side-wall lock contacts gripping FPC cutout and provide controlled, deliberate locking force.
MINIFLEX® series connectors can be used in applications where frequent serviceability and reworks are often required. Figure 3 shows the integrated mechanical lock in MINIFLEX® 3-BFN series connectors and compares the retention force of 19 pin connectors with and without lock for reference.
